What is Maileg?
Maileg is the Danish design brand of Dorthe and Erik Mailil, founded in 1999. The name is a contraction of their surname and "leg" — Danish for play. It began with a single mouse in a matchbox, and a whole world has grown around it since: families of mice and rabbits, clothes, furniture and houses, all with the same nostalgic, handmade feel.
What makes Maileg unusual: two collections appear each year, and items are retired afterwards. That makes Maileg not only a toy but a much-loved collector's brand — for children and adults alike — with pieces that become sought after and rare later on. It is the kind of toy you keep and pass on.
What is in our Maileg collection?
- The mouse family — the heart of Maileg. You will find the complete royal family here: king and queen (16 cm), prince and princess (13 cm), alongside the little fairy (11 cm) and the ballet dancer. See all Maileg mice.
- Plush rabbits — the soft Bunny Plush at 27 cm and Bunny Plush Medium at 34 cm: timeless soft toys and lovely new-baby gifts.
- Mouse houses and dolls houses — the SuitCasa is a portable mouse house in the shape of a suitcase, with built-in beds and room for furniture: close it up and take it with you. For staying at home there is the House of Miniature dolls house.
- Suitcases and tooth boxes — the metal cases are an overnight bag and a storage box in one, and the tooth boxes turn every wobbly tooth into an occasion for the tooth fairy.
- Sets to start with — such as the Ballet Mice in Dance Studio: two mice and their own ballet studio in a single gift.
Because Maileg brings out a new collection twice a year, our range shifts with the seasons — what you see today may be a collector's item six months from now.
Maileg by age
The soft plush rabbits are there for the very youngest. The real mouse play starts at around three: that is when the stories begin, the little conversations between mice, the caring and comforting and acting out of daily life. At our own nurseries we see how valuable that role play is — it is one of the strongest engines there is for language and for social and emotional growth. And collecting knows no age limit: a striking amount of Maileg goes to adult enthusiasts.
The perfect gift
Maileg may well be the most-gifted brand in our shop: small enough to surprise, special enough to keep. A mouse as a treat with a birth announcement, a rabbit as a new-baby gift, or one new family member under the Christmas tree each year — that is how a collection with a story grows. Frequently asked questions about Maileg
What does Maileg mean?
The name combines the surname of founders Dorthe and Erik Mailil with "leg", the Danish word for play. The brand has existed since 1999.
Which sizes does Maileg use?
Maileg works with fixed size lines. For the mice: the baby is around 10 cm, little brother and sister 10 to 11 cm, big brother and sister around 13 cm, and mum and dad mice (such as our king and queen) 15 to 16 cm. Note that "micro" is a rabbit size, not a mouse size. Our plush rabbits run from 11 to 34 cm. Clothes and furniture are made per size line, which is why we state the size on every product.
From what age is Maileg suitable?
The soft plush toys can be there from babyhood. For the mice with clothes and small accessories the guidance is usually 3 years and over — check the age indication on the product page.
What is the difference between a bunny and a rabbit?
It comes down to the ears: the bunny has long, floppy ears and the rabbit has upright ones. That makes a rabbit measure a little more at the same size. Otherwise they come in the same sizes and can wear the same clothes.
Why do Maileg items disappear from the collection?
Maileg releases two collections a year and retires older items. That is why some pieces become rare and sought after by collectors later on — and why the collection is a surprise again every season.
How do you clean Maileg?
More easily than you would think: the soft toys and mice are washable at 30 degrees, for most models simply in the machine. Take the clothes and loose accessories off first, and keep cardboard and wooden parts such as skis out. Let them dry thoroughly afterwards and push them back into shape while still damp. The exact washing guidance is on every product page.
